Step from foot to foot, tread and progress with the same foot

This video had me in a fit of giggles, it’s so British and old fashioned, “Step from foot to foot, tread and progress with the same foot…”

Archive newsreel footage from 1943 of Lou Praeger and his band at the Hammersmith Palais, west London. Dance teacher Josephine Bradley explains how to jive dance after a demonstration by dancers Tony Jackson, Mavis Sutton, Norma Cave and Jack Orton-Smith.

It’s from a series Pop at the pictures: Jitterbugging in the Guardian in which Jon Savage trawls through the archive of British Pathe newsreels to pick out pop cultural gems. Other clips include:

Jitterbug mania – British Pathé video
Archive newsreel footage from January 1939 of a dance competition in Cincinnati, Ohio, with reference to ‘hep cats and hep chicks’.

Rhythm – British Pathé video
Archive newsreel footage from 1943, probably filmed at Pathé studios in London. It attempts to draw parallels between rhythms occurring in nature and the jitterbug, America’s latest youth dance craze
